The Derby or Blucher has an open lacing. In an open lacing system the quarters are sewn on top of the vamp with the shoelace eyelets facings stitched on top of the quarters. The open lacing gives the shoe a bold look. The shoe is easy to put on. The Derby is an ideal shoe for normal and wider feet with a high instep.
The Derby comes in many varieties, and the open lacing gives them a slightly less formal look than the Oxford. Depending on colour and model, the Derby is perfect to wear with a suit.
A plain black Derby is a formal shoe, and a very good alternative to the Oxford.
